Staff Bio

Andy Gibson is an experienced rugby coach and educator with a strong background in athlete development and sports performance. As a Lecturer at ACPE, he teaches within the sport performance department specifically working with our coaching and football degree.

Previously, he led the Crusaders Global Rugby Program Manager/Coach position, focusing on high-performance strategies and player development. He has also held coaching roles at New Brighton RFC, Canterbury Rugby, and Eastern Suburbs RFC, specialising in athlete and program development.

With a Bachelor of Sport Coaching and a Master of Education (Sport Coaching) in progress, Andy blends practical coaching experience with academic knowledge to support our coaching students development.

Teaching Interests

Andy’s teaching interests include coaching pedagogy, session design, sports performance, professional communication, and youth athlete development, with a particular focus on football codes.

Research Interests

Investigating the factors that contribute to the success of semi-professional rugby teams, with a particular focus on coaching self-efficacy, players’ perceptions of their coaches, team dynamics, and roster quality in determining on-field performance and overall team success. The impact of game-based learning in rugby training, examining how interactive, game-driven methods enhance players’ tactical understanding, decision-making skills, and overall performance while fostering greater engagement and team cohesion.
