Work placement while studying is a valuable opportunity which provides students with experience in the career field they wish to engage in. Not only does this provide individuals an advantage over other applicants when applying for jobs, it also prepares them for what to expect in their field and increases confidence in their work.
Simran Parmessa, recently completed her Bachelor of Applied Fitness Degree with ACPE. An international student from Mauritius, she was looking to move out of her country to Australia and follow her father’s footsteps. Simran was not able to attend her dad’s graduation in Sydney, so she decided to study in Sydney. After days of searching for a course in fitness, she came across the Bachelor of Applied Fitness degree at ACPE.
It was the opportunity to work closely with industry professionals and interact with like-minded students that drew Simran to the Bachelor of Applied Fitness course at ACPE; “I studied fitness due to my personal transformation, I had a medical condition that made me obese and I was just unhappy with who I was. I became passionate about fitness so I decided to dive deep in the industry and understand all of its relevant content and enrol in this degree to help me pursue a career in this area.”
Simran went on to say “I was supposed to do a 60-hour work placement last year, but due to COVID, my scheduled placement fell through. The Careers Team didn’t give up on me and Simone was persistent to find me one.
“Finally, I got placed with Belgravia Leisure at Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre, and this is where I was offered a full-time job as a Gym Instructor/Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer. The knowledge acquired through this degree was very powerful”.
Belgravia Leisure, State Manager Customer Service, Alex Simmons, said, “Simran has been an awesome edition to our team! We are committed to working with ACPE to provide their students with real life and applicable industry experience through in venue placements. Simran has now joined our team as an employee and it’s great to see the pathway works so well”.
Simran’s advice to fellow students was to never give up and the experience you get is definitely time invested but also being able to learn from the industry experts is just as important as having the theoretical knowledge.
