The Postgraduate: Graduate Diploma of Sports Management (GDSM) has been developed based on extensive consultation with experts in the field. This provides you with not only a post-graduate qualification but also crucial work experience that aligns with industry requirements and expectations. The Postgraduate: Graduate Diploma of Sports Management can be completed in less than six months via full-time online study. Part-time study is also an option, to assist students in balancing work or other commitments.

Each unit will run over a 10-week period (a session). The units are delivered online providing flexibility for you to balance work and study commitments. Academics will also be available for one-to-one discussion and support.

There are six core units:

  • SBG4001 Principles of Sport Management - This unit introduces the foundational concepts of sports management, covering the diverse and dynamic nature of the sports industry. You'll learn about organisational structures, event management and the global impact of sports to manage sports organisations effectively.
  • SBG4002 Managing People in Sport Organisations - The Postgraduate: Graduate Diploma of Sports Management focuses on human resource management in sports, addressing issues like team building, motivation and leadership. You'll gain insights into effective communication strategies and conflict resolution, which are crucial for managing staff and athletes in a sports environment.
  • SBG4003 Financial Management in Sport - Here, you'll delve into the financial aspects of sports organisations, including budgeting, financial planning and resource allocation. The unit emphasises the importance of financial acumen in ensuring the sustainability and success of sports entities.
  • SBG4004 Integrated Sport Marketing & Communication Technologies - This unit explores marketing strategies and communication technologies for promoting sports organisations and events. You'll learn about digital marketing, public relations and the use of emerging technologies to engage with audiences and sponsors.
  • SBG4005 Leadership in Sport Organisations - Focusing on leadership theories and practices, this Postgraduate: Graduate Diploma of Sports Management prepares you to lead sports organisations effectively. Topics include decision-making, ethical leadership and developing a vision to guide teams and organisations towards success.
  • SBG4006 Sport Industry Project - Apply your learning in a real-world setting, demonstrating your ability to tackle complex issues in the sports industry. It's an opportunity for hands-on experience and professional development in your area of interest.

You can also choose two of the following elective units, allowing the tailoring of content to suit your area of interest.

  • SBG4051 Ethics and Integrity - Learn the core values of ethics and integrity in the sports sector. You'll explore various ethical dilemmas, governance issues and the importance of maintaining integrity in sports administration. It's about fostering a culture of ethical decision-making and understanding the impact of these decisions on athletes, organisations and the broader community.
  • SBG4052 Athlete Wellbeing and Case Management - Focused on the holistic care of athletes, this unit covers the mental, physical and emotional aspects of athlete wellbeing. You'll learn about developing effective support systems, managing athlete health and career transitions and case management principles in sports. This Postgraduate: Graduate Diploma of Sports Management is essential for those aiming to ensure the long-term welfare of athletes.
  • SBG4053 Strategic and Operational Risk Management - In this unit, you'll acquire skills in identifying, assessing and managing risks within the sports environment. Covering both strategic and operational aspects, the Postgraduate: Graduate Diploma of Sports Management emphasises the creation of risk management plans that ensure the safety and sustainability of sports organisations and their activities.
  • SBG4054 Managing Technology in Sport - From data analytics to fan engagement platforms, you'll explore how technology can be leveraged to enhance performance, streamline operations and engage audiences. Learn to navigate and manage the technological advancements shaping the future of sports.
  • SBG4055 Law and Governance in Sport Administration - Here, you'll delve into the legal frameworks and governance structures fundamental to sports administration. The unit covers topics like contract law, dispute resolution and compliance, providing you with the knowledge to navigate the legalities and governance issues inherent in the sports industry.
  • SBG4056 The Power and Potential of Sport - This course explores the broader societal impact of sports, highlighting its power as a tool for social change, community development and international relations. You'll study the influence of sports on cultural and economic aspects of society and understand how sports can influence positive change.

Each unit will run over a 10-week period (a session). The units will be delivered online, allowing you to tailor their study to your individual timetables.  Academics will also be available for one-to-one discussion and support.

This Postgraduate: Graduate Diploma of Sports Management is for individuals working towards management roles in the sports industry. You will have to meet the following requirements:

  1. Have at least two years’ work experience in the industry. You must provide a resume, a reference from your employer confirming your employment and experience, and a personal statement about your readiness for higher education studies.

 

  1. You will need to provide one of the following:
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a recognised higher education provider or an equivalent recognised overseas qualification with demonstrated proficiency in English;

OR

  • An Associate Diploma, Diploma, or Advanced Diploma from a recognised provider qualification, combined with at least two years of industry experience (you are required to provide a resume and a reference from an employer confirming your employment and experience, together with a personal statement about your readiness for undertaking higher education studies);

OR

  • Demonstration to the Dean’s satisfaction of good selection prospects as a student (you are required to provide: a resume confirming at least five years of relevant employment and experience; at least two professional references; and a personal statement about your readiness for undertaking higher education studies), and ineligibility to compete for admission based on the above academic achievement criteria.

 

NB: This course is not available to international students.
