Video interviews have become a normal practice within the hiring process, particularly during COVID-19. More and more employers and hiring managers are introducing video interviews within their hiring processes. This is certainly a reflection of the times and has forced us to develop new skills to ensure that we are not left behind.
Not only do video interviews save time and money, they allow hiring managers to quickly differentiate candidates and interview more people in a shorter amount of time. Oh, and there’s that other added benefit of the fact that they can be carried out remotely of course!
Surely enough, during the pandemic, you would’ve learnt the basics of video interviews, right? Find a quiet place, turn your mic on and you know the rest. If you have a video interview coming up soon and you want to stand out against the competition, then it’s time to take your video interview to the next level.
Digital Handshake
The Digital Handshake has become the new secret to acing your video interview. This handshake substitutes the “standard” version. It’s a virtual greeting that shows that you’re friendly, professional and ready to get started.
To give your interviewer a digital handshake just follow these three simple steps:
- Look at the camera
- Lean slightly forward, shoulders & eyes focused ahead
- Nod your head in a slow, confident, deliberate gesture without breaking eye contact
Minimize Distractions and Set the Scene
Determine where the interview is going to take place, remember, people hear what they see. Therefore, whatever your interviewer sees in the camera shot will be instantly evaluated. Find a quiet corner, with good lighting and blank wall. This will not only ensure that you look professional but will mean that focus is on you and only you.
Be Prepared
Video interviews are like face-to-face interviews in this respect, however, it’s just a matter of doing things a little bit differently. Log in 10 minutes early to test your internet, your sound and to ensure that you are calm and centred when the interview begins. It’s a good idea to have your resume beside you alongside the job description and any speaking points that you will want to cover. Do not read off these like a script but having them handy will take the stress off.
Practice, do not Memorize
You don’t want to sound like a robot throughout your interview—whether answering or asking questions or giving your elevator pitch. Your interviewer will be able to tell if you aren’t being genuine, so it’s a good idea to practise with a friend or family member. This will be a good chance to rehearse with different personalities and answer a variety of different questions. While it may be awkward, it will be ok to make mistakes and learn from them, so you’re better prepared for the real thing. It’s very crucial to keep things simple. Do not give a long-winded answer if the question doesn’t need it. Being clear and concise is one of the most important things in a job interview.
Now that you are all set up to ace your video interview all you need to remember now is to smile…camera…action!
