Support is one of the key priorities that the CDS Team at ACPE focuses on. We believe that career planning starts from day one of your studies. Some students meet with us in their very first semester at ACPE, whilst other students wait until their final year. The important thing is that students make the effort to meet our team.
The CDS team supports all past and current ACPE students with all of their career planning including resume and cover letter writing and mock interviews. However, further studies advice and guidance is something we pride ourselves in.
Graduate of Health Science (Exercise), Nawel El Arab (Class of 2020) reached out to the team via email during her last semester of her studies. Initially, Nawal connected with us to express her disappointment around current opportunities available to her, but she soon changed her perspective. Nawel had never met or approached the Careers Team and therefore made up her mind according to discussions she had with her classmates. Nawal soon organised a meeting with our team to understand what her future journey could look like.
Nawel’s dream was to become a Physiotherapist and was convinced that this will never happen as ACPE’s Health Science exercise degree was not a direct pathway to post-graduate studies at other universities.
Nawal came in the following day for a meeting, where she was advised appropriately of her options, which were, entry into Masters of Physiotherapy at either University of Sydney or UTS. Additionally, she was surprised to learn that she would be able to apply for the Doctorate of Physiotherapy at Macquarie University with no additional studies.
Nawel had achieved a GPA of 5.19, which was above the minimum requirement of 4.5. With the assistance of our Careers Team, she lodged her application for a Doctorate of Physiotherapy at Macquarie University. Early this year she received an offer and will start in Semester 2 of 2021.
When we asked Nawel about her involvement with the CDS Team, she said, “One thing that I’ve learnt while studying at ACPE is not listening to any student. I say this as everyone has different experiences. Simone helped me apply for multiple physiotherapy courses, without her support, I would have not applied and made it into Doctor of physiotherapy”.
She then went on to say “If you think Health Science (Exercise) degree won’t get you into Physiotherapy, well it will, just don’t give up. My advice to you, if you want something, put in the hard work and you can achieve your goals”.
Nawel will be joining a number of BHSc(ex) graduates that have successfully gained entry into postgraduate studies. The fields of study are diverse and in addition to physiotherapy, include exercise physiology, nutrition & dietetics, high performance, science & innovation and public health.
