Final Year Sports Business Students line up with the best in the business
ACPE Blog 2

Final year ACPE Sports Business students have had a taste of what it takes to organise an online event, as part of their Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement for unit SPB3201 Event and Project Management.

Under the guidance of Duncan Tweed (Head of Department – Sports Business) and Craig Hammond (SPB3201 Lecturer) over 30 students were responsible for planning and delivering Moving Forward – an ACPE Online Forum. Due to the impacts that COVID-19 had upon delivering in person events, students were able to apply their learnings and work together in working groups to successfully deliver the Forum for fellow ACPE students, staff, alumni, and Industry Partners. During the final six weeks of Semester, students were split into the following working groups to bring this student driven idea to life: Production, Ticketing, Marketing, Communications, Editing and Tech Support. Students worked collaboratively both in their own groups and with others, providing updates, troubleshooting, and taking advice from ACPE Academics and Industry Guests around how to improve their respective areas when required.

Moving Forward – an ACPE Online Forum, aimed to analyse the key learnings and takeaways from the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, in particular in light of the additional challenges resulting from the pandemic. The conversations then looked to the future: what do the lessons of the past eighteen months teach us about the future of sports management?

Students successfully recruited guest speakers from an array of backgrounds, including:

  • Simon Hill (host)- Football Commentator
  • Matt Carroll – CEO (Australian Olympic Committee)
  • Murray Elbourn – CEO (Disability Sports Australia)
  • Tim Palmer – Pararoos Strength and Conditioning Coach & ACPE Academic Lecturer
  • Scott Collis – General Manager (Liverpool FC International Academy NSW)
  • Stacey McManus – Olympian (Softball) – ACPE Student
  • Julie Charlton – ACPE Student and Athletics Coach

Duncan Tweed (Head of Department – Sports Business) congratulated the students on the delivery of the event. “The Online Forum gave students an opportunity to apply many of the theoretical teachings from the Bachelor of Sports Business (Leadership). It was fantastic to witness the achievements of ACPE students both in front of and behind the cameras. The success of this event reinforces the role that ACPE has in leading the conversation around the future management of sport in Australia.”

Julie Charlton (ACPE Student and Guest Speaker) had this to say following her involvement “It was a great privilege to be invited to speak at the Moving Forward Forum. The amazing opportunity to hear from and speak to the AOC CEO Matt Carroll was an experience I wouldn’t have ever had the chance to have without ACPE. The willingness of the forum to listen to my life and industry experience and have the opportunity to speak about my experiences in Elite parasport is something I will always be thankful for. Providing a platform for parasport industry professionals to speak about experiences is an amazing way to create an inclusive environment for everyone. Simon Hill as the MC was also an amazing, as he was very open and welcoming, allowing everyone to have their experiences heard.”

There is no doubt that this is an experience that these final year SPB3201 Students will not forget, it is not every day you get to speak with the CEO of the Australian Olympic Committee and make sure he knows what is happening!
