With a wide range of sporting careers to pursue, you may be unsure if this is the right fit for you. Allow us to break down the role and responsibilities of an Exercise Scientist and how you can qualify yourself to become an Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES).

What is an Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES)?

An Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) is a professional with a high level of training in exercise and sports science. At a minimum, an AES should hold a Bachelor’s degree that meets the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Level 7 requirements.

With this qualification, you will use your knowledge of human movement, biology, physiology and behavioural science to develop interventions that improve health, fitness, well-being and performance and assist in preventing chronic conditions. Your main goal as an Exercise Scientist would be to educate, promote and create exercise programs for individuals, groups or the general community.

At ACPE, our curriculum is designed to provide a deep understanding of how exercise impacts the human body and mind, making our graduates experts in promoting and implementing effective physical activity interventions.

What does an Exercise Scientist do?

As an Exercise Scientist, career opportunities are vast and varied, including individual coaching, coaching groups in fitness centres, gyms or private businesses, working for aged care facilities or promoting health and wellness for businesses. Key responsibilities of an AES include:

  • Fitness program development — Tailoring exercise plans to improve individual health outcomes.
  • Athletic performance enhancement — Utilising scientific principles to enhance sports performance through training and nutrition strategies.
  • Rehabilitation — Designing and overseeing programs to assist in the recovery from injuries.
  • Research and education — Conducting research on Exercise Science and educating the public and other professionals about the benefits of physical activity.

Being an Exercise Scientist is a highly rewarding role. You’ll have a major impact on enhancing an individual’s quality of life and sports performance.
