About our workshops

Dance

Lexy Panetta | Lecturer, Dance

Alexandria (Lexy) is a Sydney-based independent dance, choreographer, academic, and lecturer, who works in both the Dance and Education faculties at ACPE. She has a passion for teaching and researching dance studies in both professional and educational settings, and has a strong interest in dance, film, and choreography, specifically in improvisational practices and dance pedagogy.

About this workshop

This session will explore ways of generating original movement for dance composition and using improvisational tasks. Experiment with framing the movement material using a range of spatial pathways and musical accompaniment to see how these elements affect the intent of the movement. It is not necessary to have a background in any specific dance style, and all levels of experience are welcome.

Education

Dr Kelly Ann Parry | Lecturer, Education

Kelly is a passionate educator with a philosophy grounded in student-centric and innovative pedagogies. She currently works in Physical Education and Teacher Education and has led PDHPE faculties in Australia and the UK. Kelly believes in supporting students to be physically literate and providing authentic learning experiences so that students value movement. Her research focuses on games-based pedagogy and how to support teachers to teach through games.

About this workshop

This session will explore the continuum and complexity of games, looking at how to achieve educational outcomes using small-sided and modified games. Learn about the principles of play and how to design a game to solve a tactical problem. This will be an active workshop, so come prepared to engage in gameplay and engage your brain.

Health

Mikah Van Gogh | Head of Department, Health Sciences

Mikah has been an academic staff member at ACPE for over 10 years and has completed a Bachelor of Human Movement (Hons), Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) PDHPE, and Masters of Sports Coaching. She is an accredited exercise scientist with ESSA and has published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research examining positional demands of netball.

About this workshop

We will run mini-sessions to give students a taste of exercise science classes

  • Anatomy – how well do you know the skeletal system?
  • Skill Acquisition – can we transfer learning of a new skill from limb to limb?
  • Exercise Physiology – how powerful are you?
  • Health – how do we get people moving and improve their health?

Sports Coaching

Gareth Long | Director of Program Innovation and Development

Gareth is an experienced educator, coach, and coach developer.  Gareth has an MSc in Sports Coaching from Loughborough and in addition to a career working in schools and universities, Gareth has worked for the English Football Association and Sport Australia.

About this workshop

In this session, participants can expect to undertake a simple physical movement screen.  This screen allows the coach/strength and conditioning coordinators to identify individuals at potential risk of injury and to prevent future injury.  They would then also undertake a selection of muscle endurance tests and a series of hop and jump tests.  These tests form a baseline to allow for exercise prescription, which is then used to assess and monitor an athlete’s progress over time.

Participants will experience a coaching session that seeks to develop players’ tactical understanding. Students will explore the role of the coach and how they can support learning through their coaching techniques and behaviours.

Football

Gareth Long | Director of Program Innovation and Development

Gareth is an experienced educator, coach, and coach developer.  Gareth has an MSc in Sports Coaching from Loughborough and in addition to a career working in schools and universities, Gareth has worked for the English Football Association and Sport Australia.

About this workshop

Participants will have the opportunity to get inside the minds of elite football coaches/scouts to explore football principles and practices to support player development. Whatever your football (e.g., soccer, NRL, AFL, Unio, etc.) participants will have the chance to show their understanding and application of football tactics and strategies to support team success.

Sport Business

Duncan Tweed | Head of Department, Sport Business

He has held senior management positions in multi-national corporations in both e-commerce and public relations businesses, in Australia and the United States.

Duncan has graduated with distinction from the FIFA International Master program and commenced the second phase of his career in sport management.  He started as Legal Counsel at Football Australia, before becoming CEO of the Northern Suburbs Football Association and then Athletics NSW.  Prior to joining ACPE, Duncan was the Chief Operating Officer at Paddle Australia.  He is currently a Ph.D. candidate researching how sports leagues can capitalise on major international events, using a case study of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

About this workshop

The sports business workshop will reflect a typical tutorial within a Sport Business unit.  We will be considering one of the fundamental questions of the course: what makes sports businesses different from other businesses.
